How to Play
Otherworld provides a wide vast world for the user to explore,
therefore some things in this world will leave you questioning "What does this do?"
What is the point?
Otherworld has no specific "point" or goal to acheive,
the game relies on what you, the player wants to do.
players can choose their lifestyle within this fantastical world from being a slayer of creatures to a humble fisherman
Otherworld truly allows the player to chose what they want to do, providing a non-linear experience to players.
So how do I play?
You start in the Undergrowth, a small city filled to the brim with adventurers, merchants and townsfolk
you move using WASD
click on enemies to attack them
click on weapons to buy them
the Wayward update is bringing a inventory system alongside many more things Check the Update out
What if i'm lost?
although I seriously doubt you'll be truly lost and have no clue where you are, a new update is bringing Cartography as a skill, allowing you to read maps better, as you grow the skill, the more information you gain from each city
What's the purpose of this site?
the whole purpose of this site, is to act like a central hub for all things Otherworld. I get that it's hard to go from site to site, scouring the internet for news, links and such about your favorite game
so this website was made to be your central place for everything regarding the game.
Q/A
Q: Will this come to mobile anytime soon?
A: Maybe, depends on the playerbase and how many people actually play from mobile devices
Q: When will development officially end?
A: Development will always continue, after the entire game is done, I might just take a break, be more community oriented, and/or make weekly updates
Q: Will Clients/Modding be allowed?
A: I'm not sure, really depends if the backend is changed by the time the game is done.
Q: Is this a hobby or a job?
A: I would consider this the middle-ground, it's not really a job - im not chained to it. rather I would consider it a passion project
Q: Why did you start working on Otherworld?
A: I started making Otherworld after me (a RSC player) played Aberoth for the first time, I also enjoyed the depth and world building of Dwarf Fortress, as I had come straight off of making a 2D Dwarf Fortress side project
Q: How many people did you expect at launch?
A: I honestly didn't think anybody would care, but over a span of a couple of days the game grew like never before, it was crazy.
Q: Will there be a Otherworld 2?
A: Again, really depends how big the team is and how big the playerbase is, If I am working on one, it's not going to be a EoC type update.
Q: What's your favorite MMORPG?
A: Runescape, next question.
Q: Will you ever consider getting a publisher?
A: depends on the situation, right now I'm alright.
Q: Do you enjoy the coding side of things or the community side
A: I love coding and testing, I'm not much of a person to be a Community Manager
Q: Will you ever sell the game?
A: Never, but again it also depends on how the game is going, If I were I would want to keep working on the game, either as a game developer or have some sort of say in how it grows.
-History of Otherworld-
Otherworld wasn't exactly made straight from the get-go, it took time and effort.
The game was originally named "Growth", the game was a cozy farming game - at that time I was really chasing that
feeling of a grinding game, a game with satisfying rewards. eventually the design I had in my head vs. the game that had come out had conflicted
I changed the artstyle of the game and it looked really ugly - I decided to drop the project and make a new one, this time I would try to remake Aberoth
the game wasn't made with the idea of Runescape in the start, it was supposed to be a clone of Aberoth - which is why the characters are retro.
In a week I had practically made a clone of what I thought Aberoth was (after playing Aberoth I realized I got everything about the game wrong.)
I needed a name for the game, so I went to a website with a bunch of fantasy words, and I scrolled through them, putting my favorites in a list, eventually I presented these names
to a friend, who picked "Otherworld" as the name.
by then I needed music for the game, so I checked out Gdevelop's discord server and looked at the introduce yourself page, and there was a composer who was looking to make music for MMORPG games,
which was oddly there the moment I needed it. I sent a message out to him, and not much later he responded, I told him about the game and he accepted the offer.
that composer was Joel, who would go on to make literally all the tracks in the game - thanks much Joel.
that same day I went onto a bunch of Reddit pages and promoted the heck out of my game, eventually people were pouring in, I made a IndieDB page and it soared to number 1 in a couple of days
maybe it was just dumb luck, but somehow a passion project, literally made for fun and not at all expected to be popular exploded. everyday I was sent emails and notifications and messages and even
a few people wanted to "interview" me, which I take very lightly especially because after I agreed, they didn't even leave another message.
I created a discord server and the game started gaining members slowly, At the same time, me and joel were freaking out, this game had only been out for a couple of days yet
it smashed all my other records - from that day on I knew I was practically chained to the game forever.
